Super-dee-duper Bowl

Damn, that was a great game last night. I was pulling for the Giants--not because I have anything against New England, but it's always fun to see a huge build-up come crashing down. Also, the Giants have played scrappy football for the past several weeks, and I like scrappy teams. The Giants played the Pats very hard in week 17, so it shouldn't have come as a surprise that they were up to the task of beating the 18-0 Patriots in the Super Bowl. What was surprising was how effectively the Giants' defense shut down New England's offense--the highest scoring offense in NFL history, IIRC. DW started the game leaning slightly towards New England, but she damn near leapt from her chair during the Giants' final drive, when Eli Manning sprang loose from a certain tackle and threw that incredible pass to David Tyree, then tossed the ball into the end zone for the winning touchdown shortly thereafter. It may have been the best Super Bowl ever.

There was one big surprise that had nothing to do with the game itself. In the midst of the slick, ultra-expensive Super Bowl commercials was an ad for the Obama campaign. I don't know that any campaign has ever aired a Super Bowl ad before, but this is the first time we've had a massive number of convention delegates chosen two days after the game in states all across the country. I suppose whether it will result in votes may depend on whether people found it annoying to have politics intrude on something as sacred as the Super Bowl.

I actually dozed off in the middle of the game for a second then played some Rock Band. I'm glad I game back up in time to see the fourth quarter. You couldn't have scripted a better ending.

w00t on the Obama ad as well.

The gas station down the road is selling paraphernalia for candidates from both parties. I made a point of placing an Obama sticker atop a Hillary one. Huckabee was the only Republican still in the race whose stuff was on display. Both parties in this state are having primaries this coming Saturday; we probably would have gone on Super Duper Tuesday, but tomorrow is Mardi Gras.
