It was funny as hell the first time a group of attorneys got hauled in for jury duty, only to gripe out loud about how their time was being wasted by having to wait around like everybody else. In Orleans Parish, several of our attorneys have sat on juries. That may be because that parish takes anybody who shows up. St. Tammany is a bit more civic-minded, so more people appear for jury duty and the like. I'll be dog meat tomorrow morning, but I will get another full day of administrative leave.Randyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14225554333698783398noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6468251.post-1104804742410646062005-01-03T20:12:00.000-06:002005-01-03T20:12:00.000-06:00I love it when you have some time to think, Randy....I love it when you have some time to think, Randy.

Well, yeah. Standing alone amidst a myriad of sorrows means to me that it is hard not to be egocentric, so even though you can empathize with others' sorrows, it's your own sorrow that ultimately separates you from others.
I feel helpless to alleviate any of your pain; I can only feel sad thinking about your daily struggles, for example, raising autistic children. But my empathy doesn't really solve anything.

There are worries that even my husband has that he feels completely alone with. I can tell him I understand or empathize, but it doesn't satisfy some deep craving for complete acceptance and understanding. I have been forced by this same feeling of "aloneness" to seek my own answers to inner turmoil, but I don't discount the collective help of others.

I just don't get Zen -- it seems so unnatural to reduce one's self to zero.

PS -- I can't believe that being a lawyer who knows the ins and outs of the federal court system wouldn't be disqualified from jury duty. I've heard from an experienced lawyer that when an issue goes as far as a trial, that almost always means the defendant is guilty as charged.Phoebehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17187479379019211329noreply@blogger.com
